Whitten Oval Redevelopment
- Matthew Boyd
“When you’ve seen where we’ve come from… you just wouldn’t believe what we have at Whitten Oval today. The facilities are now right up there, and it makes the players feel like the professionals we are.
“When I go to the Club and Whitten Oval now I see a real community around us. The first thing you see when you drive in is a child-care centre!”
The $31 million redevelopment of Whitten Oval has transformed our football ground for the Club and the community. It has been the largest capital improvement in the Club’s history, and has helped to guarantee the financial viability of the Western Bulldogs.
The redevelopment has breathed new life into Whitten Oval and turned it into a community hub – thousands of people come onto the precinct every day for work, sport, and the use of community facilities.
Funds raised by the Forever Foundation have directly contributed to the redevelopment, helping the Club achieve its full vision for the site, including:
-
A new Elite Learning Centre – professional training, rehabilitation and learning facility for our players;
-
The Susan Alberti Bulldogs Community Child Care Centre – a not not-for-profit 105 place centre. The Bulldogs are the first, and only, AFL Club to operate a community child care centre;
-
A new four court indoor basketball, netball and volleyball facility, the Community Sports Hall, for local schools and sporting groups;
-
Tenants including Victoria University, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development; the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation; and Taralye – an organisation for deaf young children.
-
Pound Café – open to the public – bringing visitors onto the site every day;
-
Modern administration and office space for the Club, and function facilities for hire by the community;
-
Renewed public spaces so visitors have more to enjoy.
The Whitten Oval Redevelopment Fund is still open and donations are required to complete the project. To donate to the Whitten Oval Redevelopment Fund, click here
Communtiy Sports Hall
The new Western Bulldogs Community Sports Hall, which opened in September 2011, is a four court, state-of-the-art international standard indoor sport facility at Whitten Oval.
It is used by local schools and sporting groups who no longer have to travel out of the area to use a modern indoor facility for netball, basketball, volleyball and more.
The Forever Foundation secured the financial support of the John T Reid Trust, and the Sidney Myer Foundation to make this project possible.
